A Palestinian doctor from a poor family in a Gaza refugee camp, Dr. Abuelaish has been crossing the lines that divide Israelis and Palestinians all his life – as a physician who treats patients on both sides of the line and as a humanitarian who sees improved health and education for women as the way forward for the Mideast. In the 2009 Gaza War, Israeli shells killed his three daughters and niece. In the hours following the bombing, Dr. Abuelaish made international news when he reached out to the public live on Israeli television, bringing his devastating loss home to Israeli audiences. He astonished everyone by not reacting to the tragedy with hatred, but rather by renewing his humanitarian call for peace. In his book, Dr. Abuelaish does not set out a political solution to the conflict; he simply tells his own story.
Eli Wiesel called his story “a necessary lesson against hatred and revenge.” Israeli author David Grossman wrote, “It is so rare to meet a man who despite his own losses, continues his belief in humanity. Through his eyes I could see another way, a way the two nations could treat each other. A way that could extract what is good, special, and humane in both of them.”
