Late June weekend. A good time to celebrate! 25,000 people gathered in one place to be happy, to dance and sing until dawn.

Gay Pride? Boombamela Festival? Broza on Masada? Not really. The year is 1947, and the hottest and most “cool” thing is a dance conference held at Kibbutz Dalia. From all over the country flock the young and young at heart. They set up tents for the night, wear the embroidered blouse and go frolic in the dance of Dodgeball.

The person who is there to record the Independence generation in all its glory, is of course an acquaintance of ours from an earlier era – the Jewish philanthropist – American Fred Monosson. In the following video, his camera captures, perhaps without realizing it, the final moments of grace of a nation standing at the beginning of a decisive war. A few months after that magical night of dancing, Revolutionary War breaks out and many of their contemporaries find their death in battle.

The idea of holding a conference at Kibbutz Dalia dance was born earlier in 1944, the first year of the conference. Size were modest and mostly attended by local residents. The organizers of the 1947 dance conference expected the numbers not to exceed 6,000, and the huge influx of visitors from all over the country was an exciting surprise. Kibbutz Dalia went on to hold dance conferences three more times – in 1951, 1958 and 1968.
